Stimulus Package Extended and Expanded! First time home buyers (including those who haven't owned a house in the past three years) can take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit with offers made no later than April 30, 2010. The stimulus program was also expanded to offer a tax credit of up to $6,500 for qualified buyers who have owned their present home for at least five years. Another program still in effect provides up to $10,000 - more if you're a veteran - in down payment assistance for qualified buyers. One of the requirements for this assistance is completion of a 5-hour class on home buying.
